Regional Information
Situated under Victoria's highest mountain, Mount Bogong, with a population of approximately 1650 and only 344km north-east of Melbourne this unique little township is surrounded by picturesque views of snow capped mountains, sparkling rivers and un-touched National Park bush land. On you're way into Mt Beauty you will pass the peaceful communities of Tawonga and Tawonga South, each only a few minutes apart, making up part of the Kiewa Valley and together, with Mount Beauty giving a population of over 3,000.
Mount Beauty is situated at the head of the Kiewa Valley and was constructed by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria from early 1946 to 1950 to house workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme, one of Victoria's most ambitious infrastructure projects and Australia's first large scale hydro electric scheme.
The town became the headquarters for the Hydro-electric scheme in 1946 and retained that status for 40 years. It initially allowed the construction of 200 houses but this increased to 500 in 1949.
A total of 488 houses were erected by the SEC.
