Originally a gathering place in the warmer months of the Dhudhuroa and Yaitmathang tribes, the area was used by pioneer cattlemen from 1838 as a green paradise to retreat their cattle to when grass died in the heat further down the valley. It was a cattle grazing heaven that saved cattle and cattlemen alike. Other major industries of the 19th century were dairying, tobacco growing, timber harvesting and milling. In the 1930’s to 1950’s The Kiewa Valley became the site of the first major hydro-electric power development in the Victorian Alps bringing 4,000 workers and their families who, seeing the area for all its beauty and excitement, decided to stay on. It is this hydro-electricity infrastructure that enables the most prolific and reliable snow gun coverage of any Australian ski resort. Home to Mount Bogong, the highest peak in Victoria, snow here is arguably Australia’s best.
Snow skiers and boarders will love the easy 40 minute drive from Mount Beauty to sensational ski runs and cross-country trails at Falls Creek All Seasons Resort with helicopter shuttles available to Mount Hotham for even more adventure. The area is also a paradise in summertime for swimming, air sports, photography, horse riding, fishing, hiking and trail running, easy trail cycling, plus mountain biking at famous ‘Big Hill Mountain Bike Park’, one of the best courses in Australia hosting the Enduro and Gravity MTB events among others. The MTB Park is just a stone’s throw from the centre of town so its convenience for riders is remarkable. Road cyclers are also perfectly positioned to enjoy one of the best ascents in Victoria, 29.5km up Bogong High Plains Road to Falls Creek. The ‘Three Peaks Challenge’ event provides cyclists with a tough and picturesque challenge surmounting the 3 climbs of Tawonga Gap, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek.
In Mount Beauty you’ll find all the conveniences of a primary and secondary school, public swimming pool, Post Office, chemist, supermarket, sportswear store, women’s fashion, bakery, homewares and handmade soaps, hardware store, restaurants, cafes and a Community Hall. There is a 9 hole golf course, tennis courts, two large ovals to exercise and play sports, Pioneer Park playground and BBQ area, netball court and skate park on the pondage foreshore to keep the family entertained. If you’re feeling up for it, you can also enjoy the group activity Park Run around the pondage. Alternatively the nearby local library provides ample good reads to curl up with a good book.
